For this reading lesson, I have
chosen three students who are roughly at the same reading level. Based on the
AIMSweb Maze comprehension test, all of these students have been found to be
below average readers. Fiona is rated as the highest member of our group (65th
percentile), Jimmy second (61st percentile), and Lindsey the lowest
(41st percentile). This test is used to track student progress made
from the beginning of the school year to the end of the school year.
The classroom I am placed in uses
the Reading Street literature program and each unit contains stories that are specifically
used to gauge aspects of the reader’s skills. After reviewing each student
across several units, I found all three students did not consistently meet the “words
unknown” section of these units. These are vocabulary sections based on the
stories and are usually themed vocabulary. Along with consistently missing the
words unknown criteria, the students unsurprisingly showed a lack of knowledge
with synonyms and antonyms.
From the student’s comprehension
assessment and vocabulary knowledge patterns, I have determined that two
lessons should be taught. The first lesson will involve working with the
student’s schema to help them better comprehend texts and will be based on the
work of Miller. The second lesson will involve word knowledge to improve the
student’s vocabulary skills and this will be based on Tompkins (ch. 7).
